Philip Coolidge (1908-1967) was an American film and stage actor best known for his numerous appearances in Alfred Hitchcock's films. Born August 5, 1908, in Concord, Massachusetts, he made his first film, Boomerang, in 1947. In later films, he had roles as a self-protective small-town mayor in Inherit the Wind (1960), as Dr. Cross in North by Northwest (1959), and as Wilbur Peterson in It Happened to Jane (1959). Rarely a leading character, he played William Windom's assistant, Mr. Cooper, in the first season of the 1960s TV series The Farmer's Daughter. He died at the age of 58 on May 23, 1967.

Fact
1
Balding, lean American character actor who looked older than his years. Prolific on Broadway, from his first performance in "Our Town" (1940), to his last in "Hamlet" (1964). Specialised in serious or victimised roles, exacerbated by his furtive, hangdog demeanour. A reliable character player on the small screen, he made relatively few film appearances, but stood out in I Want to Live! (1958) and The Tingler (1959), as a homicidal silent picture theatre proprietor.
