3Beginning his career as a reporter in Florida for WJHG (NBC) in Panama City, he went on to report for WBBH (NBC) in Fort Myers and WCPX (CBS) in Orlando, and WSVN (FOX) in Miami. Smith also served as a news reporter for the Twentieth Century Television syndicated program, A Current Affair (1986). In Los Angeles, he joined Fox News Edge (1998).

He was also one of only two television correspondents to witness the execution of Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh in June of 2001.
