Daryl Allan Katz (created May 31, 1961) is a Canadian businessman. Having an estimated net worth of $US 2.6 billion (as of March 2013), Katz was rated by “Forbes” as the 11th most affluent Canadian and 554th in the world. The Edmonton-based Katz is chairman and chief executive officer of The Katz Group of Companies, Canada’s leading drug store operators with over 1,800 shops and owns and manages Canada’s first mail order drugstore, Rexall Direct, one of Canada’s biggest institutional pharmacy businesses, as well as the owner of the Edmonton Oilers. Katz is a former attorney. He now resides in Edmonton, Alberta.

After school, he worked for a period in the law firm, Shoctor, Mousseau and Starkman, and then began his own practice focusing on corporate and franchise law. In 1991, in a venture together with his dad, Katz paid $300,000 for the Canadian rights to the U.S.-based Medicine Shoppe drugstore franchise which had over 1,000 shops in the USA. In 1992, they started the very first Medicine Shoppe shop and founded the Katz Group of Companies which was to become the holding company for the group. In 1996, Katz bought the storied but fading Rexall drugstore chain in Canada which at some time, solely consisted of several dozen shops. The company grew and by 1998, the Katz Group consisted of 80 Rexall shops, 30 Medicine Shoppe factory outlets, and a few smaller independent retailers. In 1997, he bought the Ontario-based, 143-shop Pharma Plus drug store chain in the supermarket operator Oshawa Group for $100 million. His foray to the U.S. wasn’t without failure: the Snyder’s chain filed for bankruptcy in 2003 and its 25 shops were sold to Walmart.
