1(on nationalism) This is the main problem today that people cannot accept other nationalities. It doesn't make me angry though, it makes me disgusted. An intelligent man will never humiliate himself by contempt for other nations.
2(about his grandson, born by his black daughter-in-law) I have a wonderful grandson. They live in Germany with my son. When Tanya Drubich learnt that I have a black grandson she said: "I knew it! I knew it was coming! He is a Pushkin, and he gave birth to a Pushkin." (probably referring to the fact that he played Pushkin on stage).
3(when asked about his terminal disease) I am a very happy man. I try to enjoy everything in life. I don't pay attention to rubbish - that's my chief talent. I don't feel that I am seriously ill. I treat it like that: any man can die any minute - a brick may accidentally fall on your head. But I do not spend my time thinking how I would die - I don't want to think about that. I know it's inevitable. For all of us. But I want to make another movie. Maybe, I won't be able to, but still, I'll try. I have no fear of death. It's a severe trial, I know. I've been there three times and came back. But it's not scary. It's scary to be dishonest. It's scary to have no friends. It's scary to be alone.
#Fact
1Before becoming a film director, he was an actor (1970 - 1980 or 1981) of the Taganka theatre, famous for its free spirit and liberal politics. This was partly the reason why his top-rank communist father-in-law lost his place in the Soviet Communist Party Politburo.
2His debut as a director was "The Black Monk" (1988) based on an Anton Chekhov's story. It won the prize of the Culture fund of Georges Sadoul (France) for best debut and two more prizes at the Venice Film Festival.
3His movie "Music for December" was shown in Festival de Cannes in the Un Certain Regard section.
4In 2007 organized and was elected the president of the highly-acclaimed by film critics "2Morrow" Film Festival. The third one will open 16.10.2009 - the day, when he would have been 62.
5He loved cars and Alpine skiing.
6He died 27.09.2009 because of the throat cancer.
7In one of his last interviews, already knowing about his disease, he spoke of his plans to make a new movie - he wanted to put on screen the story of the Russian poet Mayakovsky and his lover Lilya Brik.
8Was married to the daughter of the Soviet Communist Party Politburo member Dmitry Polyansky.
