Robert Metcalfe Bio/Wiki, Net Worth, Married 2018
Robert Melancton “Bob” Metcalfe (created April 7, 1946) is an electrical engineer from America who co-invented Ethernet, founded 3Com and formulated Metcalfe’s Law. As of January 2006, he’s an overall partner of Polaris Venture Partners. At MIT’s Project MAC, Metcalfe was responsible for assembling a number of the hardware that will link MIT’s minicomputers using the ARPAnet. Metcalfe was so enamored with ARPAnet, he made it the subject of his doctoral dissertation. Nevertheless, Harvard flunked him. His inspiration to get a fresh dissertation came while working at Xerox PARC where he read a newspaper regarding the ALOHA network in the University of Hawaii. He identified and repaired a few of the bugs in the AlohaNet version and made his evaluation section of a revised dissertation, which eventually earned him his Harvard PhD in 1973. Metcalfe was working at Xerox PARC in 1973 when he and David Boggs devised Ethernet, a standard for linking computers over short distances. Metcalfe identifies the day Ethernet was created as May 22, 1973, the day he circulated a memo labeled “Alto Ethernet” which included a rough schematic of the way that it might work. Boggs identifies another date as the arrival of Ethernet: November 11, 1973, the very first day the system really worked.
