Samrajyam (English: The Empire) is a 1990 Indian Malayalam gangster film directed by Jomon. It centers on the story of Alexander (Mammootty), a powerful underworld don.The film was appreciated for its technical brilliance and later many Indian gangster films like Baasha and Hum took influences from this film. Due to the film's extravagant style factor, composer Ilaiyaraaja gave a completely new treatment to the background score of the film; different from his earlier works. The film had a post-modern synthesizer oriented score, where stylized rhythms and basslines were fused with orchestral strings. The film was a box-office blockbuster. It ran more than 100 days in Geetha theatre, Kozhikode. The film had an excellent outing in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu as well, when its dubbed versions were released. A sequel to Samrajyam is announced under the title would be Samrajyam II: Son of Alexander with renowned Tamil director Perarasu directing the movie.
