Nathan Tinkler (created 1 February 1976) is a former mining magnate and businessman in the Hunter Region, New South Wales, Australia. Much of his riches, most later lost, was obtained from investments in the mining sector.
Nathan Tinkler worked as an apprentice at BHP’s Bayswater opencut mine to get a period until he was either fired or given a redundancy package. He was supposedly frequently in debt during his time in the mine and refused to pay or mistreated his lenders. In the age of 26 he began his own mine machines care company. His rise started in 2006 when he borrowed A$500,000 to purchase the Middlemount coal mine in Central Queensland for A$11.5 million. In December 2007 he consented to sell 70% of Middlemount to Macarthur Coal to get A$57 million in cash along with a package of Macarthur shares valued at A$184 million. Subsequently Macarthur became a takeover target and its own share price doubled. In May 2008 Tinkler sold his Macarthur shares to get A$422 million. Tinkler lived formerly in Merewether Beach, nevertheless, in June 2012, Tinkler sold his house in Merewether and moved to live in Singapore along with his family. On 31 October 2012, Tinkler said he wished to increase his position in Whitehaven Coal and garner support from investors to request a meeting to pass the existing board and management.
