1He earned a master's degree in social work at Columbia University, and had a career in social work for several years. Then he met actor Zero Mostel through a mutual friend. Mostel said he need comic material for a radio show, and Stein had an off-the-cuff idea. Mostel paid him $15 for it, and his writing career was underway.
