Byrum Saam was born on September 11, 1914 in Fort Worth, Texas, USA as Byrum Frederick Saam. He was married to Anne Fitzpatrick. He died on January 16, 2000 in Narberth, Pennsylvania, USA.
After broadcasting mostly losing teams during his tenure with the Philadelphia Phillies and Athletics, retired following the 1975 season having never broadcast a postseason game. When the Phillies reached the playoffs in 1976, Saam was briefly brought out of retirement for the National League Championship Series, in which Philadelphia was swept by the Cincinnati Reds.
