Hawkwind are an English rock band, one of the earliest space rock groups. Their lyrics favour urban and science fiction themes. They are considered a key link between the hippie and punk cultures. Hawkwind are primarily known for playing "space rock", a hybrid of hard rock and acid rock that united the sonic power of the former and the free improvisation of the latter. Formed in November 1969, Hawkwind have gone through many incarnations and styles of music. Dozens of musicians, dancers and writers have worked with the group since their inception.
Frequently mentioned on the Channel 5 television series The Wright Stuff (2000). Host Matthew Wright is a devoted fan and has described them as "the world's greatest rock band".
Even though an underground/festival band, they had a major commercial success with the 1972 song "Silver Machine", which entered the UK singles chart in July 1972, reached number three and spent a remarkable 22 weeks on the chart. They had further minor chart hits with "Urban Guerilla" (39) in 1973 and "Shot Down in the Night" (59) in 1980. They were regulars on the album chart between 1971 and 1993, achieving 101 weeks on the chart with 22 albums, including the top ten hit "Space Ritual Alive" in 1973.
