He attended the University of Pennsylvania and acquired an interest in films growing up in Paris and befriending New Wave directors Jean Luc-Godard, Francois Traffaut and Jean-Pierre Melville. Cornfield's American films in the 50's and 60's have been received with mixed critical reviews.
