Harry Lange was born on December 7, 1930 in Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany as Hans-Kurt Lange. He is known for his work on 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and The Meaning of Life (1983). He was married to Daisy. He died on May 22, 2008 in Headington, Oxford, England.
Studied art in Germany in the late 1940s before arriving in America in 1951.

Served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War illustrating training manuals for flying schools. Joined NASA later in the 1950s where he served as section head for the future project staff. He led a group of illustrators who depicted interplanetary and deep space projects. He left NASA in 1965 and soon became involved with the "2001" movie.

Worked closely with rocket scientist Wernher von Braun and illustrated his book, "History of Rocketry and Space Travel".
It was Harry's wife, Daisy, who inspired the last scene of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), when Hal the robot starts singing the song standard "Daisy, Daisy".

Moved to Oxford, England in the 1990s and exhibited his work in the Ashmolean Museum, the Vale and Downland Museum and the Oxford Museum. His elder son John is a curator at the Oxford Museum.

Suffered a stroke and had to be moved to St Luke's Hospital in Headington, England. He passed away three years later on May 22, 2008.
