Landis was an all around rider, with particular abilities in scaling, time-trialing, and descending. Landis turned professional in 1999 using the Mercury Cycling Team. In January 2010, a French judge issued a national arrest warrant for Landis on computer hacking charges associated with the 2006 doping claims.
Until 2010, Landis maintained his innocence and mounted a shield. Although Landis’ legal team documented inconsistencies in the management and assessment of his urine samples, the disqualification was upheld. On May 20, 2010, after nearly four years of fighting the claims, Landis disclosed to regular doping, and disclosed that Lance Armstrong and a number of other top riders who rode on his team doped as well. He was suspended from professional contest through January 30, 2009, following an arbitration panel’s 2-to-1 opinion on September 20, 2007. Landis appealed the results of the mediation hearing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which later upheld the panel’s opinion. In January 2011, Landis was not able to discover a new team, which essentially ended his professional career.
After impressively winning the 2006 Tour de France, an anti-doping test revealed an unusually high ratio of the hormone testosterone in his urine. He denied the accusations. (July 2006)
