Following the war, he returned to St. Louis and began a delivery service business. In 1948, he took employment in the Lindberg Cadillac car dealer where he finally became a sales manager. Targeting individuals whose cars were in the store, the Executive Leasing Company started operation having a total of eight autos. In 1969, Jack enlarged outside Saint Louis and switched the name of the business to Enterprise (named following the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier upon which he’d served in World War II). Unlike his opponents, who focused on company leases at airports, Taylor concentrated on the hometown marketplace offering house pick-up services which led to Enterprise’s “We’ll Pick You Up” motto. By 1980, the rental fleet had grown to 6,000 automobiles. In 1989, the fleet had grown to 50,000 and he switched the name of the business to Enterprise Rent-A-Car. By 1992, Enterprise surpassed $1 billion in sales and by 1995, it reached $2 billion in sales. In 2007, Enterprise bought National Car Rental and Alamo Rent-A-Car. Taylor’s company credo is: “Take care of your own clients and employees first, and profits will follow.”
