Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa (created 17 November 1952) is a South African politician, businessman, activist, and trade union leader that has served as the Deputy President of South Africa under Jacob Zuma since 2014. In August 1982, Cusa concluded to form National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and in December Ramaphosa became its first secretary. Ramaphosa was convention organizer in the groundwork resulting in the foundations of the Congress of South African Trade Union (COSATU). He presented a keynote address at Cosatu’s start rally in Durban in December 1985. Under his direction, union membership grew from 6,000 in 1982 to 300,000 in 1992, giving it control of almost half of the absolute black work force in the South African mining sector. As General Secretary, he, James Motlatsi (President of NUM), and Elijah Barayi (Vice President of NUM) also directed the mineworkers in among the largest strikes ever in South African history.
