Matt's maternal grandparents were both of part Polish descent. Matt's other ancestry is English, Austrian, Scottish, German, and more distant Irish and 1/128th German Jewish-Dutch Jewish. Through his father, Matt is descended from the Sheftall family, Jewish immigrants who settled in Georgia in the 1700s; Matt's six times great-grandfather Levi Sheftall was the brother of Mordecai Sheftall. Mordecai was a Colonel in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, who was the highest ranking Jewish officer of the Colonial forces.
