Ioannis Metaxas (Greek: ??????? ???????) (12 April 1871 – 29 January 1941) was a Greek general and dictator, serving as Prime Minister of Greece from 1936 until his death in 1941. He governed constitutionally for the first four months of his tenure, and thereafter as the strongman of the 4th of August Regime dictatorship.
Famous for saying "okhi" ("No!") to Benito Mussolini's demand that Greece surrender to Italy on October 18, 1940, now a day of national celebration.

A career soldier, he fought in the Greco-Turkish War of 1897 and in the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913, in which he was assistant chief of the general staff. Exiled for his German sympathies in 1917 to Italy, along with most other prominent figures of Constantine I's government, when Greece joined the Allies in World War I.
