Marinovich is famous for the well-documented, extreme focus of his training as a young sportsman, as well as for his brief career upon reaching the professional leagues that has been cut short mainly due to his addiction to substances.
After traveling for just two years Marinovich tried to join up with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League, but blew out his knee about the initial day of training camp. During healing among his high school buddies introduced him to heroin. Shortly after Marinovich was detained for drug possession and served three months in different jails. In April 1999 Marinovich was cleared to reenter the NFL, but suffered a herniated disc playing amateur basketball. That summer he tried out as well as received interest in the San Diego Chargers as well as the Chicago Bears, but neglected the physical examination. So he signed as a back-up quarterback with all the BC Lions of the CFL. His usage of heroin and cocaine rose and his weight fell, as he’d spend nearly all of his spare time using drugs. At one point Marinovich badly cut his hand having a crack pipe during halftime and had to covertly bandage himself. Despite being requested to remain with all the team for another season, he understood he was in a poor situation and left the team. Despite experiencing acute heroin withdrawal he had a strong season, tying the record for the majority of touchdowns in one match by throwing 10 touchdowns against the Houston Thunderbears. Marinovich was named to the all-rookie team, so when the Avengers’ franchise player, but the day he received his signing bonus he was detained for purchasing heroin. Marinovich’s career continued to fall apart, as he was ejected from following matches for throwing things at referees, and finally was suspended in the team in 2001. Despite flashes of splendor, Marinovich’s professional career is broadly regarded as a failure.
