Martinez lost his WBC Middleweight title against 3-division former world champion Miguel Cotto on June 7, 2014, at the Madison Square Garden in NYC. Cotto knocked Martinez down three times in the initial round and when in the ninth round. Trainer Pablo Sarmiento made a decision to call off the fight before the tenth round, against the urging of Martinez. Based on reports, Sarmiento told Martinez “Victor, your knees will not be reacting. Sergio, look at me … I am gonna quit this one. Sergio, you’re the greatest for me personally. You will often be the most effective winner, Sergio.”
