She died on March 2, 2008 in Tbilisi, Georgia.
Her favorite filmmaker Sergei Parajanov cast her in all his films since the 1968 masterpiece The Color of Pomegranates, the favorite film of Parajanov's best friend Mikhail Vartanov whose film Parajanov: The Last Spring (1992) also features Sofiko Chiaureli.
