Irish character actress, on stage from 1918. Prompted by Gerald du Maurier to change her name from McIldowie to Macgill for her appearance in "Dear Brutus". Critically acclaimed as Desdemona, opposite Basil Rathbone, in a London production of "Othello". In small film roles from 1920.
She had two daughters, one being Angela Lansbury and the second, Isolde Denham, who was married to the actor Peter Ustinov (1945-1950) with whom she had one daughter, the actress Tamara Ustinov and secondly to Derek Dempster (1950-1967). Isolde died from motor neurone disease in Brighton in 1987. Her son-in-law is the actor Malcolm Rennie.
