Lya Lys was born on May 18, 1908 in Berlin, Germany as Natalia Lyecht. She was an actress, known for L'Age d'Or (1930), Confessions of a Nazi Spy (1939) and The Return of Doctor X (1939). She died on June 2, 1986 in Newport Beach, California, USA.

According to an in-depth article on Lya by Laura Wagner in Films of the Golden Age, Fall 2015 issue, Lya was nearly caught by the Nazis while performing the play "The King's Dough" in Paris in 1937. She managed to escape on a Norwegian freighter.
