Leon Wilkeson was born on April 2, 1952 in Jacksonville, Florida, USA. He was married to Evelyn Susan Abner, Ronda Rose Britton, Sherrie Lynn Rigby and Rena Wolfe. He died on July 27, 2001 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
A character in the supernatural thriller The Coffin (2008) refers to a person as Ol' Man Wilkeson. This is in honor of Leon. The writer of the script is a big Lynyrd Skynyrd fan.

Lynyrd Skynyrd's original bass player was Larry Junstrom. After Leon replaced him in 1972 Larry joined 38 Special. The founding members of Lynyrd Skynyrd were Ronnie Van Zant - vocals, Gary Rossington - guitar, Bob Burns - drums. Allen Collins - guitar, & Larry Junstrom - bass, joined shortly thereafter.
