Johnny Griffin was born on April 24, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois, USA as John Arnold Griffin III. He is known for his work on A Great Day in Harlem (1994), Blue Note - A Story of Modern Jazz (1997) and Thelonious Monk: Straight, No Chaser (1988). He died on July 25, 2008 in Availles-Limouzine, Vienne, France.
Taught, at Chicago's DuSable High School, by Captain Walter Dyett, whose pupils included Nat "King" Cole and Dinah Washington.
