Catherine Hessling (born Andrée Madeleine Heuschling, 22 June 1900, Moronvilliers, Marne – 28 September 1979, La Celle-Saint-Cloud, Yvelines) was a French actress and the first wife of film director Jean Renoir. Hessling appeared in 15, mostly silent, films before retiring from the acting profession and withdrawing from public life in the mid-1930s.
Attractive brunette with bee-stung lips, who started as a model for the painter Auguste Renoir (1917-19) in Provence. Married his son Jean in 1920 and acted in some of his films, and in several others directed by Alberto Cavalcanti. Her acting style was not unlike that of Charles Chaplin and she became known as the 'female Charlot'. After her separation from Renoir in 1930, she turned to dancing and made only a few more films before retiring from the screen altogether.
