Became a PADI instructor after moving to California and started diving the Sea of Cortez in the early 1980's. Moreover, Lee and her husband Jose Luis opened the first PADI Dive Facility in Los Cabos, Mexico. They went on to start a dive operation to explore the Socorro Islands in 1992.

Her father was a politician in Charlotte, North Carolina who died in 2006 while her mother committed suicide in 1977.
