#Fact
1Long-standing executive producer at Universal. In charge of production, 1928-1936. He was made President of the company on his 21st birthday. However, his rash spending on projects which failed to recoup the money at the box office drove the studio almost bankrupt. Consequently, in 1936, the Laemmle family was ousted from Universal in a hostile takeover.
2In his 2013 study. "The Collaboration: Hollywood's Pact With Hitler", Harvard scholar Ben Urwand documents how German rioting against All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) prompted Laemmle Jr. to make major cuts in the film so it could be re-released in Germany. But Urwand also points out that Laemmle, who was Jewish, helped hundreds of Jewish refugees escape Europe by securing visas to the United States for them.
