Nick Hanauer (born 1959) is an American entrepreneur and venture capitalist residing in Shoreline, Washington. After earning his philosophy degree in the University of Washington, Hanauer got his company beginning in the family-owned Pacific Coast Feather Company, where he continues to serve as cochair and CEO. In the 1980s he co-founded Museum Quality Framing Firm, a big West Coast franchise. In the 1990s Hanauer was among the initial investors in Amazon.com (where he served as advisor to the board until 2000). The organization guides and funds early stage businesses like HouseValues Qliance, and Newsvine. Hanauer is cofounder of The True Patriot Network, a nonpartisan think tank framed upon the thoughts he and Eric Liu presented in their 2007 novel, The True Patriot. Hanauer and his wife, Leslie, co-manage The Nick and Leslie Hanauer Foundation “which targets public education as well as the surroundings, and also supports various progressive causes locally and nationwide.” He co-founded the League of Education Voters (LEV), a nonpartisan political organization focused on enhancing the quality of public schooling in Washington. In June 2014 Hanauer wrote an oped for Politico magazine where he foresaw pitchforks coming for the .01%ers (his own plutocrat class) if they failed to address the matter of raising wealth inequality. He noticed how it could lead to the destruction of the middle class and harm to the affluent class. He made comparisons to the interval preceding the French Revolution in the 18th century.
