Clark Terry (born December 14, 1920) is an American swing and bebop trumpeter, a pioneer of the flugelhorn in jazz, educator, and NEA Jazz Masters inductee.He played with Charlie Barnet (1947), Count Basie (1948–1951), Duke Ellington (1951–1959) and Quincy Jones (1960). Terry's career in jazz spans more than seventy years and he is one of the most recorded of jazz musicians.

He was one of the first black musicians to hold a staff position at a television network and for 12 years a mainstay of the "Tonight Show" band, as well as one of the most high-profile proponents of teaching jazz at the college level.

In later years, he was active in jazz education, appearing at high school and college clinics, writing jazz instruction books, and running a summer jazz camp.

In 1942, he joined the Navy, and was assigned to the band at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station near Chicago.

He played with Count Basie and Duke Ellington from the late 1940s through the 1950s. He joined The Tonight Show band, where he played under its famed bandleader Doc Severinsen. He also headed up his own bands, including Clark Terry's Big Bad Band and Clark Terry's Young Titans of Jazz.

His mother died when he was 6, and within a few years he was working odd jobs to help support his family. He became interested in music when he heard a relative playing the tuba. When he was 10, he built a makeshift trumpet by attaching a funnel to a garden hose. Neighbors later pitched in to buy him a trumpet from a pawn shop.
