Otto Muehl was born on June 16, 1925 in Grodnau, Burgenland, Austria. He was a director and actor, known for Wehrertüchtigung (1967), Kardinal (1967) and Mano-Test (1970). He was married to Claudia Weissensteiner. He died on May 26, 2013 in Moncarapacho, Olhão, Portugal.

In 1991, Muehl was convicted of illicit drug use and sex with minors while acting, for 20 years, as the autocratic governor of the Kommune Friedrichshof, a commune in the Burgenland province, east of Vienna, where behavior was governed by an eclectic theory of sexual and political liberation called Aktionsanalyse. He was sentenced to seven years in prison, of which he served six and a half.

Austrian performance artist, painter, writer and film maker. In the 1960s, his work dealt with the social taboos surrounding sexuality, to the point that "Art and Revolution," performed at the University of Vienna in July, 1968, led to arrests. After 1966 he was a founder-member of the Institut fur Direkte Kunst.
