Chan is inspired by the work of African American creative musicians and takes note of the spirit of dedication, individuality, expressiveness, and freedom shown through their music. His albums has received have received critical acclaim such as in Cadence magazine and SF Weekly. Chan is a prominent participant in the Asian-American Creative Music Movement. His Big Fun Philharmonic is a large ensemble based on the core idea of giving musicians freedom to express themselves as vividly as possible.
