Fayed’s company interests include possession of Htel Ritz Paris and once Harrods Department Store, Knightsbridge. Al Fayed sold his possession of Fulham F.C. to Shahid Khan in July 2013. Fayed wed Finnish socialite and former model Heini Wathn in 1985, with whom he had four kids: Jasmine, Karim, Camilla and Omar. In 2013 Fayed’s wealth was estimated at US$1.4 billion, making him the 1,031st-wealthiest man in the world in 2013.

In 1972, Fayed bought the Balnagowan estate in Easter Ross, Ross, Northern Scotland. From a preliminary twelve acres, Al Fayed has since built the estate up to sixty five thousand acres. Al Fayed has invested more than 20 million in the estate, restored the 14th century pink Balnagowan fortress, and created a tourist lodging company. The Highlands of Scotland tourist board granted Al Fayed the “Freedom of the Highlands” in 2002, in acknowledgement of his “exceptional contribution as well as dedication to the highlands.” As an Egyptian with links to Scotland, Al Fayed was intrigued enough to finance a 2008 reprint of the 15th century chronicle Scotichronicon by Walter Bower. In line with the chronicle, Scotland was afterwards named in her honor. The story is challenged by modern historians. Al Fayed afterwards declared that “The Scots are initially Egyptians and that is the reality.” In 2009 Al Fayed disclosed that he was a supporter of Scottish independence from Great Britain, declaring to the Scots that “It Is time to waken up and detach yourselves from the English as well as their awful politicians…whatever help is desired for Scotland to recover its autonomy, I’ll supply it…when you Scots recover your liberty, I’m prepared to be your president.”
