Todd started his career at Sammy Chung’s Wolverhampton Wanderers, who won promotion as winners of the Second Division in 1976–77. Then they finished 15th in the First Division in 1977–78. He played just five league matches during his time at Molineux. Despite his dearth of expertise, Port Vale manager Dennis Butler broke a team record to buy him for a 37,000 fee in August 1978. Expectancies loomed large on the child as he fought to meet his price tag and was singled out for mistreatment at Vale Park. He scored eight goals in 42 Fourth Division and FA Cup matches in the 1978–79 season. He scored only one goal in three Fourth Division matches Frank Burrows’s “Pompey” in the 1979–80 promotion effort. He left Fratton Park and afterwards played for Fareham Town (Southern League) and Waterlooville. After retiring, Todd returned to Portsmouth as the youth team manager.
