Satyadev Dubey (19 March 1936–25 December 2011) was an Indian theatre director, actor, playwright, screenwriter, and film actor and director. He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1971.He won the 1978 National Film Award for Best Screenplay for Shyam Benegal's Bhumika and 1980 Filmfare Best Dialogue Award for Junoon. In 2011, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India.
Although he came from the Hindi heartland of India, his vision was national and international. He played a major role in bringing together the theaters of the Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, and Bengali languages.

He was born into an upper-caste family in Bilaspur in 1936. He went to Mumbai to obtain a degree in English literature. He wanted to be a cricket player, but became interested in theater.

Mr. Dubey revived and modernized the Hindi theater, helping it to compete with the English-language theater that prevailed in Mumbai.
