Peter Handke (German: [ˈhantkə]; born 6 December 1942) is an Austrian novelist, playwright and political activist. His body of work has been awarded numerous literary prizes. His writings about the Yugoslav Wars and subsequent NATO bombing of Yugoslavia with criticism of the Western position and his speech at the funeral of Slobodan Milošević have caused controversy.
Romantically linked to Sophie Semin, who gave birth to their daughter Léocadie in 1992.

After leaving his hometown Graz in 1965, he lived in Düsseldorf, Berlin, Kronberg, Paris, in the United States, Salzburg and Chaville, France.

His most noted works include "The Hornets" (1966), "Offending the Audience and Other Spoken Plays" (1966), "The Left-Handed Woman" (1976), "Across" (1983), "My Year in the No-Man's-Bay" (1994) and "Kali" (2007).

Although being nominated for the Heinrich Heine Prize by a jury, the city council of Düsseldorf didn't accept this decision because Handke spoke at the funeral of former Yugoslavian dictator Slobodan Milosevic (June 2006).

While studying law at the University of Graz from 1961 to 1965, he established himself as writer with the Grazer Gruppe (Graz Author's Assembly). Nobel Prize winner Elfriede Jelinek were amongst the other members.
