German conductor who began studying piano, composition, conducting, and the viola while still a child. Became principal conductor of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf in 1985; Generalmusikdirektor at Nuremberg in 1988; principal guest conductor of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna in 1993; and music director of the Deutsche Oper, Berlin, in 1997.
