Erika Mann was born on November 9, 1905 in Munich, Germany. She was a writer and actress, known for Confessions of Felix Krull (1957), The Buddenbrooks (1959) and Wälsungenblut (1965). She was married to W.H. Auden and Gustaf Gründgens. She died on August 27, 1969 in Zurich, Switzerland.

In 1933, she founded an anti-Fascist cabaret called "Die Pfeffermühle" (The Peppermill) in Munich, but had to leave Germany some months later. It opened in Zurich again and became a rallying point for exiles.
