AJ Carothers (sometimes given as "A.J. Carothers") (October 22, 1931 – April 9, 2007) was an American playwright and television writer, best known for his work with Walt Disney, who was a close friend. Disney's daughter later spoke at Mr. Carothers' funeral. Carothers describes reaction to Disney's death at the studio in a video included at the Walt Disney Family Museum (San Francisco).

He wrote his first story when he was 9 years old. It was a murder mystery, and he sold it to a classmate for 15 cents.

He began his professional career as a story editor for CBS-TV's Studio One in Hollywood (1948), and was associate producer of Playhouse 90 (1956) and General Electric Theater (1953). He went on to write screenplays and books for over 100 movies, TV shows, and stage plays during his 40-year career.

Attended Northwestern University and the University of Houston. Earned a degree from UCLA in 1954.
