Steve Van Buren was born on December 28, 1920 in La Ceiba, Honduras as Stephen Wood Van Buren. He was an actor, known for Triple Threat (1948) and The Complete History of the Philadelphia Eagles (2004). He was married to Grace. He died on August 23, 2012 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA.
He is survived by his three daughters; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.

He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1965. He was selected to the NFL's 75th Anniversary team in 1994 in a backfield with Jim Brown; O.J. Simpson; Nagurski; Gale Sayers; Walter Payton; and Marion Motley.

From 1944 to 1951, he led the Philadelphia Eagles to two National Football LEague championships and three Eastern Division titles. He held the NFL career rushing records for yards (5,860), attempts; (1,320) and touchdowns (69) until they were broken by Jim Brown.

His parents died before he was ten years old. He and his younger brother moved to New Orleans, Louisiana to live with their grandparents. He dropped out of high school to work for the iron found. He returned two years later to high school and the high school football team as an End. He earned a football scholarship to Louisiana State University. He started out as a blocking back. He spent the final two seasons as a star running back for the team.

He was rejected for wartime military service because of his poor vision in one eye from a childhood accident. He was the fifth player chosen for the Easgles first round pick in the 1944 National Football League draft.
