After graduating in the University of Cape Town having a Bachelor of Commerce, he joined the Greatermans group in the Ackermans office in 1951 in the age of 20 as a trainee supervisor. Ackermans were founded only after World War I by his dad Gus, but was sold to the Greatermans group in 1940.
Ackerman was eventually offered a place at Greatermans head office in Johannesburg. Norman Herber, chairman of Greatermans made a decision to take up a food retailer called Checkers. Ackerman was finally put in charge of Checkers, making a resounding success out the company.
Ackerman won the Excellent Young South African award in 1965, as well as Gary Player and by 1966, in the age of 35, he was the managing director of 85 Checkers shops; yet, he was fired in exactly the same year.
