Attended a convent school and made her Broadway debut at the age of 21 as a flapper in "The Intimate Stranger". Signed, in 1925, to a 5-year contract by Paramount's New York studio. After appearing in just three films, she had the contract cancelled and married Samuel Goldwyn in New Jersey after a 48-hour courtship.

A 1969 Los Angeles court order appointed her conservator of her husband's estate, valued at $19.7 million. She also effectively took control of Samuel Goldwyn Productions.
Interred at Forest Lawn (Glendale), Glendale, California, USA, in the Garden of Honor, unmarked. (Private area. Not accessible to the general public). She is buried next to George Cukor at her request because of her long, but unrequited love for him.
