Jean Nicolas Arthur Rimbaud (/ræmˈboʊ/ or /ˈræmboʊ/; French pronunciation: [aʁtyʁ ʁɛ̃bo]; 20 October 1854 – 10 November 1891) was a French poet born in Charleville, Ardennes. He influenced modern literature and arts, inspired various musicians, and prefigured surrealism. He started writing poems at a very young age, while still in primary school, and stopped completely before he turned 21. He was mostly creative in his teens (17–20). His "genius, its flowering, explosion and sudden extinction, still astonishes".Rimbaud was known to have been a libertine and a restless soul. He traveled extensively on three continents before his death from cancer just after his thirty-seventh birthday.

Quote
1
When the endless servitude of woman is finally shattered, when she comes to live by and for herself, man - up to then abominable - having released her, she too will be a poet! Woman will find a portion of the unknown! Will her world of ideas differ from ours? She will find strange, unfathomable, repulsive, delicious things.

Fact
1
A brilliant yet tortured artiste who searched for a new style of literary expression, Rimbaud never wrote for publication again after his major work "A Season in Hell". He turned his back on the artistic world and traveled on three continents for about 20 years until he died at age 37. His poetry, as well as his life, made an indelible impression on 20th century writers, artists and musicians.

His relationship with fellow poet Paul Verlaine was the subject of Christopher Hampton's 1967 play "Total Eclipse". Hampton later adapted his play for the 1995 film version (Total Eclipse (1995)) directed by 'Agneiska Holland' and starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Rimbaud.
