Melvin Barry Hines, FRSL (born 30 June 1939) is a British author who has written several popular novels and television scripts. Hines is best known for the novel A Kestrel for a Knave (1968), which he adapted for Ken Loach's 1969 film Kes.
On grounds of artistic integrity, he bravely turned down an offer from Disney for the film rights of 'Kes'. They wanted to change the fate of the kestrel and give the film a traditional Disney-type ending. His decision ensured he would miss out on a financially lucrative deal and possibly further work for them.
