Jimmy Hill was born on July 22, 1927 in Balham, London, England as James William Thomas Hill. He is known for his work on The Match (1968), Match of the Day (1964) and A Night of Comic Relief 2 (1989).
His father was a milk and bread delivery man who had served in WWI. As a youth Jimmy was a fan of Crystal Palace. For his national service, he was a clerk in the Royal Army Service Corps, and played football alongside professionals.

He was appointed OBE for services to football in 1994. A statue of him was unveiled outside Coventry's ground in 2011.

He played Association Football as an amateur for Reading and professionally for Brentford and Fulham. As the Chairman of the Professional Footballers Association, he negotiated the end of players wage capping in 1961. This resulted in the Fulham captain Johnny Haynes becoming the first player to earn £100 per week. He became a successful broadcaster with ITV, the BBC and Sky. He managed Coventry City to two promotions between 1961 and 1967. He later served as Chairman of Coventry City, Charlton Athletic and Fulham Football Clubs.
