Tony Ashwin Kanal (produced on August 27, 1970) is a British-American musician, record producer and songwriter. His musical work beyond the group comprises creating and songwriting with artists including reggae vocalist Elan Atias and No Doubt bandmate Gwen Stefani, amongst others.
Kanal’s dad indicated that Kanal learn to play the saxophone because it was the former’s favourite instrument, so he purchased one for Kanal. Kanal afterwards learned the best way to play the bass guitar from his schoolmate Dave Carpenter. After viewing one of third wave ska band No Doubt’s early shows, he joined the group as its bassist. Kanal said that his parents were finally supportive of his determination to continue a vocation in music; yet, they’d desired him “to go right into a secure profession” and frequently reprimanded him for giving so much time to music, occasionally in the expense of school. In October 1991, No Doubt started recording with producer Dito Godwin. When Interscope Records started turning tunes down, No Doubt did it by themselves. When No Doubt went on hiatus, Kanal started a career supporting the mixing console. In 2004, Kanal made three songs for the soundtrack to 50 First Dates. Additionally in 2004, Kanal created and co-wrote three tracks on Gwen Stefani’s first solo album Love. Angel. Music. Baby.. Kanal subsequently made Elan Atias’s debut record, Together as One, that has been released in June 2006. Kanal made the song “Rent” for the ska punk group Pepper’s 2006 record No Shame.
