I've always admired people who can tell a story with a simple song. You don't need much more than a guitar or a piano and a voice. That's what I've responded to, even when I was a kid. Even now, I like to think that both Joni [Joni Mitchell] and I are expressing some sort of truth -- hers might be just a little deeper, that's all.
[on his tradition of bouncing the original ideas for his songs off his wife, Erin] I'll say something, like an idea for a song or whatever, and if she laughs then I'll start writing it, and if she doesn't, I don't even bother. Luckily, she has a good sense of humor.
"Lullaby" was the first song I wrote where I felt like, "Wow, I nailed it!" I don't want to say that people can relate to it--actually, you kind of hope that nobody can relate to it. But it seemed to me that the style had become subtler. And I saw how to set a course at the beginning, turn 90 degrees, and then once you think you know what's going on, turn it around again. That's pretty much how I've worked ever since then.

Holds a B.A. in Drama from Western Michigan University, 1993.
Learned of his Tony Award nomination for The Wedding Singer through a phone call from his mother-in-law, Kalamazoo photographer Fran Dwight.
His performance in The Wedding Singer on Broadway has earned him Drama League and Drama Desk nominations, as well as a nomination for the coveted Tony Award.
Makes a point of ending all playbill bios and all liner notes on his albums with, immediately following a loving remark to his wife: "I love you all. Except Heilman." This is in reference to Jeff Heilman, a close friend of his from his university days and his former songwriting partner.
Lynch has opened for comedians Jay Mohr, Jeff Foxworthy, Steven Wright, Bobcat Goldthwait and Lewis Black.
In the summer of 2004, he went on a tour co-headlining with Mitch Hedberg. The tour was such a success that they added an extra leg and ran into 2005. This was the last tour of Hedberg's before his death.
His wife, Erin Dwight, is generally the first person to hear his original ideas for songs. He trusts so deeply in her taste that if she doesn't laugh at the initial concept, he will scrap the idea completely. Dwight recorded a short film, while her husband was away touring, called "Lynch and Teich in Brooklyn", to show that she missed him. This was included in the extras on his 2004 concert DVD, "Live at the El Rey". She also co-created the cover concept for his latest album, "The Craig Machine", with her mother, Kalamazoo photographer Fran Dwight.
His parents are a former priest and a former nun. Both became teachers.
His father is a singer and stage actor as well. Lynch's earliest work in the theater was performing with his father in local community theater productions in Saginaw as a child. The first live musical he got to see was Man of La Mancha, a community theater production in which his father played the role of the Padre.
He periodically satisfied his love of the stage by returning to Michigan and doing summer stock.
Considering himself a musician first and a comedian second, Lynch cites great singer/songwriters Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell as his childhood inspirations, rather than comics.
As Lynch's repertoire of material includes some duets and also a few songs for three voices, close university pals and fellow comedians Mark Teich (of The Second City) and Rod Cone (of The Rod Cone Situation) are also very frequent guests on his tours, and he rarely tours alone.
As a result of the duality of his act, Lynch turned heads in the music industry as well as on the comedy circuit. He attracted extra attention usually not available to comics by playing venues more often suited to music than to comedy (eventually graduating to hugely famous locations such as the House of Blues, The Town Hall and the esteemed Kennedy Center).
After moving to New York City in 1996 with the intention of becoming an actor, a friend and comedy club owner suggested Lynch play some of the comic songs he'd written at university for an audience. He soon found great success in comedy clubs and other venues around the city (notably Catch a Rising Star and Caroline's), and became a regular on radio shows such as Opie and Anthony. Over the next few years, he toured colleges, universities and nightclubs around the country, avoiding as much as possible the comedy club crowd, which he has stated is not to his taste.
While at university, he participated in a sketch comedy group called "Who Are We Kidding?", with his best friend, Mark Teich, and his younger brother, Drew Lynch. He also formed a singing/songwriting duo with Jeff Heilman. They called themselves "Straightface".
Shares his first and last name with a Democratic United States Congressman from Massachusetts, Stephen F. Lynch. Amused by this, Lynch the actor/ comedian has a campaign sticker for Lynch the politician on his guitar case.
Collectively, A Little Bit Special (What Are Records?, 2000) and Superhero (What Are Records?, 2002) have sold over 160,000 copies.
Cites the film This Is Spinal Tap (1984) as his inspiration to become a professional singing/songwriting comedian
Met best friend and fellow musician/actor/comedian Mark Teich when they both attended the theater program at Western Michigan University
Grew up in Saginaw, Michigan and attended Western Michigan University. Has a younger brother, Drew.
