Got the inspiration to write one of his most popular compositions, "This Ole House," while on a hunting trip with a friend. They came upon what looked like an abandoned shack, wherein was the body of an elderly man, apparently dead of natural causes. Hamblen wrote the lyrics to the song on the spot, on the back of his lunch bag, and composed the melody within a week.

Ran as a third party candidate for President of the United States in 1952. Running on the Prohibition Party ticket, Hamblen did well enough to accumulate some 72,949 recorded popular votes in an election that saw Dwight D. Eisenhower elected President for the first of two terms.
