The casting director of 3 Ninjas (1992) was scouting martial arts' clubs for boys to appear in the film when Michael was discovered. His friends persuaded him to take the casting director's advice and audition for the role of Samuel 'Rocky' Douglas in the children's martial arts film, which he went on to successfully win. However, acting was not a lifestyle Michael enjoyed and he pined for normality so he turned down the chance to do 3 Ninjas Kick Back (1994) and the role went to Sean Fox instead.
