Martin Lee Gore (born 23 July 1961) is an English songwriter, vocalist, guitarist and keyboardist, as well as producer, remixer and DJ. He’s a founding member of Depeche Mode , and it has composed nearly all their tunes. His work now spans over three decades.
In 1980, Gore met Andy “Fletch” Fletcher in the Van Gogh club. Fletcher recruited Gore into his group Composition of Sound along with Vince Clarke. Shortly the group drafted Dave Gahan to function as lead singer after hearing him sing “Heroes” by David Bowie. Gahan is credited together with the name “Depeche Mode” after seeing the phrase as a title of a French fashion magazine, which afterwards contemplated taking them to court, but believed it might be great promotion for the magazine to allow the group possess the name. Clarke left Depeche Mode in late 1981, just following the launch of the debut album Speak & Spell. Clarke composed most of the record, with Gore giving two tracks, “Tora! Tora! Tora!” As well as the instrumental “Big Muff”. “Any Second Now (voices)” features Gore’s first lead vocals for the group. Gore sings lead vocals on several of the group’s tunes, notably ballads, his tenor voice supplying a comparison to Gahan’s dramatic baritone. Gore was composing content because the age of twelve.
