Lou Adler (born December 13, 1933) is an American record producer, supervisor, director, and an owner of the well-known Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood, California. He was inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013 as the victor, alongside Quincy Jones, of the Ahmet Ertegun Award.
In 1964, Adler founded and co-owned Dunhill Records. He was President of the label along with the chief record producer from 1964 to 1967. After in 1967, he founded Ode Records. In June 1967, Adler helped to make the Monterey International Pop Festival, along with the movie version, Monterey Pop. In 1958, Adler compose and made with Herb Alpert the tune “River Rock” for Bob “Froggy” Landers and The Cough Drops on the Ensign label (3-4014). In 1978, Adler directed the film Up In Smoke, starring Cheech & Chong. The film stays a cult hit, as well as in 2000 Adler recorded a commentary track along with Cheech Marin for the DVD release. His 1981 followup movie, Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains, was hardly released, but loved a long life on cable TV programs. ] Lou Adler was married to actress and vocalist Shelley Fabares in 1964 and produced several of her tunes. They split in 1966 but weren’t officially divorced until 1980. Now, Adler is married to former actress Page Hannah, three decades his junior. The couple has four sons, Manny, Ike, Pablo, and Oscar. Adler can frequently be seen sitting court-side next to Jack Nicholson at Los Angeles Lakers home games. Adler possesses The Roxy Theater along with his son Nic, who runs the historic music venue on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California. Peter Fonda apparently partially based his character Terry Valentine in The Limey on Adler, in accordance with Fonda’s interview on the DVD.
